Q. When do I apply to get on board?
A We do two ballots a year - from August - end of Sept and from Jan through to the end of March.

Q. Can I apply more than once?
A Absolutely. If you do not get offered a voyage the first time you apply, please apply again at the next ballot. In fact you can apply as many times as you wish as long as you are still aged 16 - 23 when you go on a voyage (ie you can sail up to the day before your 24th birthday).
Q. What happens on board during a voyage?
A Every voyage is of course different but we do offer a regular bunch of activities and things to learn on board over the course of an 11 day voyage. These activities include:

Meet The Crew,
Ship’s Tour,
Basic Knots,
Climb Aloft,
Day 2
Watch on Deck Duties,
Line Handling and Deck Safety,
Safety Equipment,
Sail Setting and Furling,
Tacking and Wearing,
Day 3–7
More Sailing,
Lectures on Navigation, Tacking Drills, Sail Theory,
Visits Ashore,
Deck Games (Weather Permitting),
Team Building and Leadership Exercises,
Day 8
Setting and Furling Drills,
Elections for Command Day.
Day9
Command Day - Youth Crew take command of the ship for 24 hours.
Day 10
Half Day Sail,
Harbour Furls,
Sod’s Opera - live performance by the crew.
Day 11
Proceed to Berth,
Presentations.
There is also often a chance to go swimming, play sports, check out National Parks, spot whales and dolphins and of course, enjoy the wonderful food cooked by our on board chef!
Q. I'd like a youth crew to visit my school to talk about Young Endeavour - is this possible?
A Sure is. We have over 100 Ambassadors who just love talking about their time on the Young Endeavour. Call our office on 1800 020 444 to arrange one to visit your school.
Q. Can I have a look on board the ship?
A We try to have an Open Day in each of our regular ports at least once a year. You can step aboard, meet youth crew and staff and learn all about what we do. All Open Days will be advertised on the website.
Q. I am over 23 years but would love to sail on a tall ship. What can I do?
A Check out the links on our web page and you will find links to other tall ships on which you may be eligible to apply.
You're going on a voyage
Q. What time does the Young Endeavour depart and arrive?
A DEPARTURE: All 11 day voyages depart at 4pm and you need to be at the ship between 3 - 3.30pm.
ARRIVAL: 11 day voyages finish at 11am, there will be a short ceremony at the end of your voyage which friends and family are invited to at 10am.
A Backpack and Crew Shirt - Sent to you by Young Endeavour Youth Scheme
Sleeping Bag and Pillow Case - An inner sheet for your sleeping bag on summer nights is recommended. You don’t have to pack your sleeping bag inside the kit bag,
Sleeping Attire,
Underwear and Socks- Sufficient for the voyage (a pair of thick woollen socks recommended for cold nights).
Tracksuit/Travel Pants (2) Jeans not recommended as they are difficult to dry
Shorts (2- On northern voyages (above Brisbane), swap a pair of pants for extra shorts.
Shirts/T-shirts (4/5 - Long sleeve shirts and collars are recommended for sun protection.
Warm Jumper, fleece, wool.
Swimming Costume/board shorts.
Toiletries - Sufficient for 10 days to include sunscreen SPF15+, lip balm, soap, comb, toothbrush and paste, shaving gear, sanitary protection, etc
Towels (2) Swimming and showering
Gym or Deck Shoes (2 pairs) - Test your shoes on a smooth wet surface for grip. No thongs, but ‘sports sandals’ are okay.
Hat, Sunglasses - Straps for both recommended to prevent losing them. Can be purchased in YEYS Souviner Locker
Beanie
Thermal top Swap some T-shirts/shorts for extra long pants/jumper
Optional Items
Small Torch
Water Bottle
Wet Weather Gear(Jacket and Pants) Provided on board
Mobile Phones - Can be brought but not used on board as they detract from the experience. They can however be used whilst ashore during port visits. Urgent calls can be made via the ship’s communication facilities (Commanding Officer’s approval necessary)
Glasses / Contact Lenses If you wear contacts, bring a pair of glasses as well
Radios/Walkman/MP3 players etc - Not allowed, however you are welcome to bring a few tapes or CDs for playing on the ship's stereo
Musical Instruments - Space is limited for cases and bulky instruments so please discuss in advance(Guitar already onboard)
Locker Size Approximately 22cm x 40cm x 67cm. You will be unpacking your bags into this space and stowing your bags elsewhere
Washing facilities - You will be able to hand wash clothing and hang out on the upper deck to dry as required
Q. Where does the ship leave from?
A Often the ship is only notified of its allocated berth (parking space!) a few days before the voyage departs or arrives.
The Young Endeavour office crew will contact you by phone as soon as we know the details.
Usually the ship will berth at the main marina in town, and when it Sydney it always berths at Fleet Base East, at Garden Island (next to Harry's Cafe De Wheels.

A The best way to know what's going on is to subscribe to our twice yearly, free enews, visit this website often and check out the Youth Crew section of the website.

Q. I'd like tell others about the Young Endeavour. Can I help?
A Of course! We have over 100 Ambassadors who regularly talk at schools, unis, Rotary clubs etc about our program. We set you up with a speaker's kit, book you in for presentations and school visits etc and give you heaps of brochures and posters.
