HEADING NORTH
Hi Everyone,Welcome to day 2 of the voyage. This morning the Youth Crew awoke to a fine Sydney morning, so to start the day everyone was mustered on deck at 0630 for an Early Morning Activity (EMA). After EMA and the normal big YE breakfast the YC were mustered on the port side of the bridge and introduced to the traditional ceremony of colours (raise flags and sing National Anthem) followed by a very informative morning brief. On completion it was straight into their first set of cleaning stations (happy hour) followed by a very comprehensive safety equipment brief given by the ships Safety Equipment Officer. While these activities were occurring Ships Staff took the opportunity to strike the awning as it is hoped that we have seen the last of our wet weather. Throughout the rest of the morning the Youth Crews primary focus was learning how to safely handle lines and winches. Following lunch the anchor was weighed and YE departed Athol Bay and commenced a slow passage down the Western Channel. During this period the watches completed sail setting and furling drills and by 1430 all of the Watch Leaders had reported that they were happy with the safety standards of their watches. Given this information tacking stations were called and the YC proved that they had “hoisted in” the past 24 hours of instruction by successfully completing their first set of tacks as a crew (but bow through the wind). On completion of the last tack I initiated a man overboard exercise so that we could demonstrate to the YC the process of handing in all sail and manoeuvring the ship to rescue a person from the water. On completion of this exercise the ship was again brought under a full press of fore and aft sails and we departed the confines of Sydney Harbour. Once in open water we were greeted by a 2m swell and a 12-15kt south easterly, which were a lot better conditions than had been initially forecast. Overnight the YC will settle into their watch routines while the Ship makes good ground to the north east.Until tomorrow take care.Yours AyeCaptain Gav

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
