Day Seven – Jervis Bay

Hi Everyone,Welcome to day seven of our voyage. The conditions remained light and variable overnight which meant the continued use of main engines as we made best speed along the NSW Coast.Following breakfast, morning brief and cleaning stations I conducted Captains Setting & Furling Drills which is an assessment done on all of the watches to ensure that they can safely set and furl sails prior to Command Day. The good news that all of the watches passed demonstrating that they have been paying attention to their Watch Leaders during the past seven days which is pleasing. Early this afternoon we entered the beautiful Jervis Bay and completed a good set of demonstrational tacks taking advantage of the well timed 12-17kt afternoon sea breeze.Once we had completed these tacks we proceeded to anchor just off the scenic Long Beach which is located at the northern end of Jervis Bay. Once at anchor the RHIB was launched and the Youth Crew ferried ashore so that they could enjoy a late afternoon swim and some beach games. Tonight with everyone back onboard we enjoyed another one of Chef Jenko’s amazing dinners and we are now just waiting for the sun to go down so that we can show the Tall Ship movie ‘Around Cape Horn’ under the stars on our upper deck movie screen. Once completed, we will revert to anchor watches overnight ensuring that everyone enjoys a peaceful night’s sleep at anchor.Kindly volunteering to write an entry in tonight’s Captains Log is Patrick from Red Watch, please enjoy! CAPTAIN’S LOG – 13MAR16Young Endeavour continued north this morning, motor sailing past places such as Bermagui, Guerrilla Bay, Bateman’s Bay, and Ulladulla. Calm and clear conditions today saw many of the youth crew change from subtle shades of green to distinct tinges of pink as sea sickness was replaced by mild sunburn. Some members of the Youth Crew caught a glimpse of a shark approximately five foot long off the port side prior to arrival in Jervis Bay which was a change from the numerous pods of dolphins that we have encountered throughout the voyage. Just as Young Endeavour was about to drop anchor a favourable afternoon breeze developed presenting an opportunity to practice demonstrational tacks, providing the Youth Crew further insight into manoeuvring the ship from the Captain’s perspective.Despite the earlier shark sighting outside of the bay all of the crew still enjoyed a swim and a game of footy at Long Beach safely within the confines of Jervis Bay after Young Endeavour finally made anchor.Patrick Red watch.
