Voyage name:
V13/16 Cairns (QLD) to Gove (NT)
07 Aug - 19 Aug 2016
Conditions:

Currently located 28nm to the SSE of Cape York and are experiencing moderate 13-16kt SE winds with a .5-1m ESE swell.  Our current speed is 6.5kts and the temperature is 22 degrees.

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to Day 5 of our voyage. The South Easterly Trade Winds continued at 15-20kts overnight which continued to give us great sailing conditions and kept our young mariners extremely busy with sail changes as we navigated our way through the reef.

By sunrise this morning we were located 8nm to the south of Cape Grenville sailing on a broad reach under a full press of sail and still maintaining a boat speed of 6-7kts. Following the normal morning activities of morning brief and cleaning stations (Happy Hour) the ship was closed up at tacking stations and in stronger conditions we completed a good set of rotational tacks. This activity gives the Youth Crew the opportunity to move around to the other watches tacking station so that they get a good appreciation of what all positions do when we tack the ship.

Lunch followed then everyone was given a two hour siesta so that they could catch up on some much needed sleep. This siesta is becoming a necessity during this voyage as due to the distance travelled we haven’t had the opportunity to anchor overnight which normally gives the crew the opportunity to get a full night’s sleep.

Later this afternoon we conducted round two of rope races then following a Staff Crew demonstration on Three Way Chats we gave the Youth Crew some time with their opposites so that they could learn as much about each other prior to conducting the activity which we did just on sunset this evening.

The Youth Crew have now settled back into their watches for the night where they will continue to consolidate their navigation and sailing skills as we transit through the Adolphus Channel and round Cape York on our way to Thursday Island where conditions permitting we  hope to berth at the Main Wharf at 1200 tomorrow.

 Until tomorrow, take care.

Yours Aye

Captain Gav
