Hi Everyone,

Welcome to day five of our voyage. This morning we awoke to an overcast day with strong 20-30kt WSW winds.

Originally we had planned to put the Youth Crew ashore on Flinders Island for a swim and some beach games but the conditions were unsafe to launch the RHIB and conduct boat transfers so our morning shore excursion had to be cancelled which everyone understood. In its place we ran a session of ‘three way talks’ (communication and getting to know you exercise) then given the conditions decided to weigh anchor and sail the 25nm over to Deal Island were we could find a more suitable anchorage to put the Youth Crew ashore.

Given the strong conditions and large 2-3m swell this passage took us 5hrs with the ship finally coming safely to anchor at beautiful Deal Islands, Garden Cove at 1600. Once at anchor we conducted another set of rope races which was followed by my sail theory presentation. Prior to dinner we celebrated Youth Crew Member Prue Gurnick’s 23rd Birthday with a very large and impressive birthday cake baked by Chef Marcos.

his evening following another amazing dinner we gave everyone the opportunity to undertake another climb the foremast then to complete the days activities Dion and Horto ran a team exercise called ‘The Spiders Web’. The time is now 2100 and everyone has settled into anchor watches for the night ensuring that they are well rested for the busy days ahead.

Tomorrow morning the Youth Crew will go ashore and enjoy the beautiful beaches and spectacular scenery of this remote Bass Strait Island then once back onboard we will weigh anchor and in what is hoped will be more favourable conditions continue our voyage to Melbourne.

Until tomorrow, take care

Yours Aye

Captain Gav
