Day 8 – Command Day

So, having remained at anchor overnight, we awoke to a smashing day in the lee of Great Keppel Island. The SSE wind had picked up overnight, but we were nice and snug, dear readers. After breakfast we weighed anchor and proceeded back out to sea, to make ground towards Gladstone. Breakfast, morning brief, happy hour… next on the agenda was something different, ladies and gents, due to it being Command Day. Elected Youth Crew folk found their staff crew opposites and sat down for some low down guff and a download of data – if you like – pertaining to their new job. I had a lovely chat with Youth Crew Captain, Catriona, for example. Gave her some tips and answered her burning questions. Preparing and setting them up as best we can. Then the time was upon us… 1300 handover. So allow me to handover the log, to the Youth Crew Captain and let’s hear her perspective on the day thus far:

“1300 – After an amazing lunch by our awesome Master Chefs, all the Youthies and the Staffies gathered at mid ships for the ceremonial handing over of the keys to the ship. The Staffies also handed over a list of challenges that they have set us to complete before the end of command day.
Once the ceremony was over it was straight into watches with Delta watch taking the first watch and getting straight into setting the sails with the help of whiskey watch before the engines where turned off. Once all the sails where set is was up to our navigator (Munz) to give us a course to steer so that we could make the way points that had been set for us.
To make our way to our second way point we had change course. This involved us furling the jib and trying to tack a couple of time before we decided to wear away instead. By the time we got ourselves turned around we were way off the course we wanted to be on so some adjustments to our chart work was needed, luckily our navigator Munz was on the job and quickly gave us a new course to steer to make our way passed way point 2.
After having an awesome dinner by our Master Chefs (Zac, Ruby and Keiren) that struggled with seasickness with the vessel rocking and rolling while they were cooking. We are now on our way to way point 3 after just passing way point 2 WHOOOOO HOOOOOO. Staffies are taking command back over the vessel at 2200 where we will heave in all the sails while they navigate us though Gladstone’s channels and lay anchor with Youthies coming to assist and do anchor watches from 0200 until breakfast at 0645.”

That is all for this evening, attentive listeners… please tune in for Command Day continuation of Captain’s Log tomorrow night. For now, it’s good night from me, and good night from them. Captain Adam+
