Currently located 530nm NW of Wellington and experiencing strong 22-28kt
NNW winds with a 2m swell. Current temperature is 14 degrees
Welcome to day 5 of our voyage. Overnight we continued to make good speed and by sunrise this morning we had sailed 585nm.
The weather this morning was overcast with passing showers and we were consistently getting wind gusts of 30kts and a 2.5m swell which really makes it hard to progress with any of program. Given these conditions and the fact that it is Boxing Day I decided to stand everyone down for the day so that they could catch up on some domestic chores like washing clothes and making sure that t heir personnel possessions are properly stowed. This down time also gives the Crew a chance to relax, catch up on some much needed sleep, read a book, play cards or just spend some time with the members of other watches.
As normal we need to make sure that the ship is being safely sailed so we always have a Watch closed up on the bridge who provides lookouts, helmsman and personnel available to hand in or set sail at a minutes notice which the new Crew have already proven that they can do very well.
Despite the slightly unpleasant weather today their have been no signs of any seasickness which really does mean that our new mariners really have found their ‘sea legs’
The time is now 2030 and since departing Sydney we have now sailed 720nm with only 530nm to go until we reach Wellington.
Until tomorrow, take care
