Day 3 – Port Arthur

Ahoy there everyone, Welcome to day three on our adventure under sail. The ship continued motor sailing south east overnight under fore and aft sails making good five knots in a low swell along the Tasmanian south east coast. The Youth Crew remained engaged in sailing a tall ship each completing a challenging four hour night watch in the prevailing conditions conducting helm duties, lookout and engineering rounds. With an obscured sunrise under an overcast sky with intermittent showers, the ship was heading into Port Arthur and by 0800 was securely at anchor in Carnarvon Bay opposite the Port Arthur historic site. With morning brief, happy hour completed Lindsay the Engineer conducted round one of non-competitive rope races enabling the Youth Crew to challenge themselves by remembering and identifying different items of safety equipment located around the upper decks. At lunch the sun broke through the cloud cover while Chef Snowy out performed himself as usual providing a superb selection of fine cuisine. It was then time for a short inspection of the Port Arthur historic site with the Youth Crew proceeding ashore in the ships boat to stretch their sea legs and hug a tree which is a reputed cure for motion sickness. With all hands back onboard by 1600 the ship weighed anchor and dinner was served as the ship rounded the magnificent rock formations on Tasman Island and shaping a course north east making ground towards the Freycinet Peninsula for an overnight passage. Until tomorrow evening, take care.Yours ayeCaptain Damien
