Hi Everyone,

Welcome to day 3 of our voyage. Overnight with the assistance of a moderate north easterly we continued to make good speed to the south and despite a number of the Youth Crew succumbing to the dreaded sailors curse of ‘seasickness’ spirits throughout the crew remained high.

By 0600  this morning we were located 50nm to the east of Broken Bay sailing under fore and aft sail on a port reach. During the morning watch the wind moderated and veered to the south east which reduced our boat speed to less than 4kts and slowed our progress.

Throughout the day we have continued with the training program and kept the Youth Crew busy with a number of activities. The forenoon consisted of sail handling and watch consolidation. Then after lunch we kicked off the first round of Rope Races (Josh the engineer’s favourite activity). This lifted spirits and breathed some life into those who had been suffering the effects of the sea.

Late this afternoon we set the square sails for the first time for the voyage then completed two ‘wears’ (putting the stern of the ship through the wind) so as to demonstrate to the Youth Crew how this is achieved with the squares set.

One of the highlights of the day has been the sighting of numerous ‘water spouts’ moving up the coast which have been formed by the weather pattern that we are experiencing on the NSW coast at the present time.

Currently we are located 38nm to the east of Shellharbour sailing on a port tack under fore and aft sails and making good a speed of 5kts. It is our intention to remain at sea overnight and continue to make ground to our first anchorage, which at this time is planned to be just of the South Coast Township of Ulladulla.

Until Tomorrow, Take Care

Yours Aye

Captain Gav
