Currently located 190nm SE of Wellington and are experiencing very strong 30-35kt NNE winds with a 3m NW swell. Current temperature is 15 degrees.
Welcome to day 10 of our voyage. Surprisingly overnight the wind moderated which reduced our boat speed to 5kts and kept the watches busy throughout the night setting and furling sails.
Just after morning brief the wind strengthened from the NNE and this has continued throughout the day and has now peaked at 35kts. Given these conditions and the forecast of a strong south westerly change we have already reduced sail and rigged the storm jib so that we are well prepared for whatever the ‘weather gods’ may throw at us. The positive side to these strong winds is that our boat speed is now at 9-10kts which will even improve more with the southerly change and a following sea.
The pleasing thing for me today has been seeing how well everyone has come together as a Crew in these stronger winds and how quickly they are developing the skills to sail this ship in what can sometimes be extreme conditions.
Currently we are located 190nm south east of Wellington with just over 4,500nm left to reach Cape Horn.
Given our current position I believe that we will be some of the first people in the world to celebrate the New Year which I think is something pretty special!!
,From all of the Crew of Young Endeavour may we wish all of our Family, Friend’s, Love Ones and everyone else who reads the Captains Log a Happy New Year!!! We all hope that you have a safe and enjoyable 2015.
Until tomorrow, take care
