Corio Bay, Geelong

Not everyday is a great day in Young Endeavour and yesterday was one of them. Youth Crew 06/00 joined the ship in the afternoon and following crew introductions we prepared to get underway. A strong NW wind was blowing the ship onto the wharf that was going to make our departure challenging. Soon we were clear of the wharf but not out of the woods. I attempted to turn the ship using the engines but in the strong winds it just wasn’t going to happen. While this was occuring we were being set back upon the wharf and getting into quite a precarious position. I ended up letting go an anchor to slow the ship up and we ended up back alongside the wharf. We tied up and had a bit of a think about the problem and decided that remaining alongside overnight would be the smartest solution and depart the next morning when the winds will have abated. Not the best way to start a voyage. In the evening and overnight we conducted our training programme as normal with everybody making it aloft climbing the yards. The youth crew were certainly having a better start than me.This morning the wind had eased off but was still setting the ship quite firmly against the wharf. Rather than risk damaging the ships side, I opted to use a tug and we eventually got away at 0900.Today will be a busy day with lots of line safety and sail handling training to be completed. We hope to exit Port Phillip Bay later in the afternoon and commence the passage to Adelaide.I’m just back from two weeks of leave having left the ship in the very capable hands of Cap’n Bob Williams for the trip to Geelong. Thanks Bob and welcome back to the fold.
