Command Day part two

Ahoy There Shipmates, Well what a busy night we had last night. The Youth Crew were kept very active on their command day with numerous tasks needing to be completed overnight. It was quite the challenging night of navigation but Captain Manning was ably supported by his willing crew and they came out of the tempest unscathed. Running only slightly behind time this morning we proceeded back down the north east channel towards Tangalooma. Unfortunately the weather continued to degrade to the point that our proposed anchorage was unsuitable and we were forced to proceed to our alternative at the delightful sounding Mud Island. A very weary Youth Crew handed the ship back to the staffies at 0930 with a mixture of reluctance and joy. After the handover we kicked into the Command Day debrief up on deck as Caitlin, Tim and myself continued the pilotage into Mud Island. Once at anchor it was time for a snappy lunch cooked up by Luke. I am constantly amazed at what that man can turn out of a galley the size of a broom closet with only 2 hours to cook. After lunch the team reassembled up on deck for a final command day wrap up and then the chance for some down time. This has been such a rare commodity of late but everyone still found plenty of work to fill in the time. Dinner was yet another amazing teak deck BBQ cooked up on deck and presented right on sunset to a ravenous crew (sailing a tall ship sure does work up an appetite). After dinner we were lucky enough to be able to share Eloise’s birthday with her. There was an awesome cake and a nice card signed by all the crew. After some tasty cake we had a 30minute curtain call for the ships concert or SOD’s Opera as it’s know onboard. Each watch presented their own skit with a couple of solo acts as well. The ship will remain at anchor overnight just off Mud Island with the plan of proceeding up the Brisbane River tomorrow to go alongside River Gate Marina at 0900 to bring onboard the half day sail group for a river cruise. It will be a tired group of Youthies that turn in tonight for a well earned rest. Until tomorrow, today is the youngest you will ever be CAPT Matt Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.Kenneth Graham Wind in the willows
